Author Biography

Edward Wagenknecht (1900-2004) was born in Chicago and earned a Ph.D from the University of Washington in 1932. His long academic career included teaching positions at the University or Chicago, University of Washington, Illinois Institute of Technology, Boston University, and Harvard University.  He wrote or edited more than sixty books, including The Man Charles Dickens: A Victorian Portrait (1929), Cavalcade of the English Novel (1942), Cavalcade of the American Novel (1952), John Greenleaf Whittier: A Portrait in Paradox (1967), and The Personality of Shakespeare (1972).
